Incident: Lufthansa B744 near Frankfurt on Sep 30th 2011, lightning strike
By Simon Hradecky, created Saturday, Oct 1st 2011 15:33Z, last updated Sunday, Oct 2nd 2011 16:48Z

A Lufthansa Boeing 747-400, registration D-ABVU performing flight LH-432 from Frankfurt/Main (Germany) to Chicago O'Hare,IL (USA), was climbing out of Frankfurt's runway 07C when the aircraft was hit by lightning. The crew levelled off at FL150, entered a holding west of Frankfurt's Hahn Airport at FL140 for about 40 minutes and returned to Frankfurt/Main for a safe landing on runway 07C about 80 minutes after departure.

A replacement Boeing 747-400 registration D-ABTL reached Chicago with a delay of 4:15 hours.

Passengers waiting for the return flight from Chicago to Frankfurt were told by ground staff explaining the delay, that the inbound aircraft had received a lightning strike.

Passenger Robert Paris on board of flight LH-432 reported, that the captain made a couple of longer announcements in German which he could not understand. Subsequently the captain told the passengers in English, that an aileron did not return to neutral and in consultation with ground staff it was decided to return to Frankfurt. The passenger subsequently looked out of the left hand window and noticed the inboard left aileron was permanently down (below the trailing edge of the wing). The passenger travelling with two small children taking his attention did not notice anything unusual prior to the announcements. The aircraft dumped fuel before returning to Frankfurt.
