Two production F-35B strike fighters conduct the first aerial refueling with a KC-130J Hercules in the sky above Eglin AFB, Fla., Oct. 2, 2012.
This mission was also notable because previous aerial refueling operations with the F-35 had been conducted with test aircraft, said F-35 officials. Marine Corps photo by Cpl. Brian Adam Jones

JPO plans to award Lockheed upgrade contract for 93 F-35s .....
"The proposed contract will provide for the Block Upgrade of 93 previously/to-be delivered aircraft, under LRIP [low-rate initial production] 2 through LRIP 5 to Block 2B, 3i and 3F and proposal preparation," reads a contract solicitation.
.....
Neither Lockheed nor the JPO will comment on how much the deal will be worth.
"The value will be announced when the contract is awarded. The FedBiz ops notice was to inform industry of the government's intent to award it sole source," the JPO says.

House Democrats Warn of Sequestration's Consequences .....
If budget sequestration is allowed to take effect in January, funding for the F-35 strike fighter program would be cut by $1 billion in Fiscal 2013, according to a new report issued by the House Appropriations Committee's Democrats.
This would force the Defense Department to cut four F-35s from the planned production buy for the fiscal year and would reduce advance procurement, thereby placing at risk the ramp-up of aircraft production in later years, states the "Dear Colleague" report, released on Oct. 9.
The report does not note which service would lose the four F-35s in the Fiscal 2013 production lot.
Sequestration would also reduce funding for the Air Force's KC-X tanker program by $99.5 million and "potentially slow" the current engineering and manufacturing development contract, states the report.
The Air Force's future bomber program would also take a $33.7 million hit, it states.
Sequestration could also disrupt military space launches as DOD would have to eliminate one evolved expendable launch vehicle from its planned buy, states the report, which HAC Ranking Member Rep. Norm Dicks (Wash.) signed.
F-35 Joint Strike Fighter has performed its first in-flight weapons release, with conventional take-off and landing test aircraft AF-1 having dropped a JDAM-series GBU-31 908kg (2,000lb) bomb on 16 October.
Jettisoned from the F-35A's left-side internal weapons bay, the instrumented weapon was released over the China Lake weapons range in California. AF-1 was flown by US Air Force Maj Matthew Phillips from Edwards AFB.
Lockheed says the F-35A has a maximum payload capacity of almost 8,200kg, with the fighter having four internal weapons points and three hardpoints under each wing
An Air Force F-35A completed the first in-flight weapons release for this variant of the strike fighter, announced prime contractor Lockheed Martin.
AF-1, flown by Maj. Eric Schultz, on Oct. 16 released a 2,000-pound joint direct attack munition from its left internal weapons bay during a flight test over the China Lake range in southern California, states the company's release.
BF-3, a Marine Corps F-35B, actually was the first strike fighter to release a weapon in flight, when it successfully dropped an inert 1,000-pound bomb over the Atlantic Ocean in August.
The F-35A has four internal weapon stations—two in each of its two weapons bays—and can utilize an additional three external weapon stations per wing, if not flying in stealth mode.
It is designed to carry a payload up to 18,000 pounds, states the Oct. 17 release.

International backing for F-35 hasn’t been stronger, says Lockheed official .....
With Australia, Israel, Japan, Italy, Norway and Turkey already having ordered long-lead production items for their initial F-35s, O'Bryan says: "I have nine countries under contract, of the 11. The international support for the programme hasn't been stronger."
Canada and Denmark are expected to commit funds this decade.
..... che, pur elencando i recenti progressi, esprime timori per il futuro .....
Referring to the threatened sequestration action from the US Congress, which would delete a further $500 billion from the Department of Defense's funding over the next decade from 2 January, Lockheed says: "With only months remaining until it takes effect, we have no guidance from the US government on how it will be implemented.
We don't know which programmes, sites, technologies or suppliers will be impacted."

Aviation Week Luminary Responds To Lexington Criticism of F-35 Editorial .....
Bill Sweetman, one of the most respected aerospace journalists in the business, has written a biting response to my Forbes piece about the F-35 fighter posted here on October 15.
That isn't surprising, because I roundly attacked an editorial that his magazine, Aviation Week & Space Technology, published October 1 criticizing the Pentagon's biggest weapons program.
The gist of what they said was that the F-35 program is faring poorly and that the Pentagon should therefore start searching for alternatives.
The gist of what I said was that the program is doing fine, and that most of the projected cost increases blamed on the prime contractor were actually caused by government actions.

Navy’s Newest Assault Ship Moonlights as Pint-Sized Aircraft Carrier .....
With the America class, the Pentagon is taking a chance on air power and, more to point, on the Marines’ version of the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter.
When America‘s sister ship Tripoli enters service in 2018, the Navy will (in essence) possess 13 carriers — these two smaller, newer models, plus 11 of the big, nuclear-powered variety.
That’s up from the 11 nuke flattops in today’s fleet.
