Some F-35B STOVL (Short Take Off Vertical Landing) are taking part in Exercise Foal Eagle in South Korea, according to U.S. military sources who talked to Yonhap News Agency.
The aircraft Lightning II will carry out “ground attack” tasks during the two-month drills.
“The addition of the F-35B is meant to deliver a strong message to the North that they could be used against the rogue state in case of a conflict breaking out on the Korean Peninsula,” an official said to the South Korean media outlets.

( http://www.treccani.it/vocabolario/simposio/ ) .....
The inaugural F-35 symposium at JB Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Hawaii, was a “who’s who of the F-35,” with more than 100 participants from the US Air Force, Navy, and Marine Corps as well representatives from Pacific F-35 partner-nations South Korea, Japan, and Australia.
“In the beginning we thought we’d only have about 35 or 40 folks, but the response was so overwhelming it’s turned into quite a large event,” Brig. Gen. Craig Wills, Pacific Air Forces director of strategic plans, requirements, and programs, told Air Force Magazine.
“This is definitely not just a meeting of senior officers and strategists. We have the real warfighters in the room and it’s been a fantastic forum,” he added, noting there were F-35A pilots, maintainers, and intelligence officers from the Air Force’s first operational unit at Hill AFB, Utah, present as well as marines who are part of the F-35’s first overseas deployment at Iwakuni, Japan.
The two-day event focused primarily on the aircraft itself, rather than the broader picture of F-35 command and control, with topics including bed down, integration, logistics, sustainment, and combat operations.

Obiettivo ..... 80 milioni di dollari .....
..... ovvero ..... le seducenti promesse del 'generalissimo' .....
Though F-35 program officials have been talking about hitting a then-year unit cost of $85 million by 2019, the new goal is $80 million by 2020 - and that may not be the bottom, said Program Executive Officer Lt. Gen. Christopher Bogdan.
Speaking at a McAleese/Credit Suisse conference in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday, Bogdan said there’s “still a lot we can do” to lower the unit cost of the F-35.
Much of that will come with block buys and multi-year procurement, which will “stabilize the buy” and allow contractors to buy materials at economic order quantities, he said.
Lots 11-13 will be negotiated as a single contract, covering 440 airplanes, and that, too, will allow volume discounts.

How Trump Was Sold on the F-35 .....

John A. Tirpak (3/24/2017)

How did the F-35 program turn around the opinion of President Donald Trump, who before his inauguration said the program was too expensive and “out of control” but recently has spoken of it favorably?
“What I think came out” of several discussions with the President, was “his desire to learn more about the program, which is good,” and “to get good value” from the program, said program executive officer Lt. Gen. Christopher Bogdan at a McAleese/Credit Suisse conference Wednesday.
“We got a chance to address some of the misperceptions” that Trump seems to have retained from early in the program, when it was having serious trouble.
A lot of which continue to be related by critics as recent news.
“Given that opportunity, we were able to explain the importance” of the F-35, Bogdan related.

To Be Determined .....
Two of the US Air Force’s premier fifth-generation fighters, the Lockheed Martin F-35A Joint Strike Fighter Lightning II and F-22A Raptor, still can’t transmit data back and forth but the service’s plan to fix the communication gap is undetermined.
Today, the F-22’s Link 16 network can only receive data from the F-35.
The JSF can both transmit and receive data with other Link 16 legacy aircraft including F-16, F-15 and other NATO aircraft, Brig Gen Scott Pleus, director of the F-35 Integration office tells FlightGlobal.
The F-35 would not receive F-22 data until a fourth to fifth generation gateway is deployed, but the timeline on that gateway is undecided, the service tells FlightGlobal.
The USAF has plans for fourth to fifth-generation communications, which would cover the F-22’s Link 16 radio, but they’re not yet programmes of record.

To outsiders, the relationship between President Donald Trump and the defense industry got off to a rather rocky start.
Tweets about programs costs led many to question how he might play particularly with two of the biggest U.S. defense companies, Lockheed Martin and Boeing.
But if you ask Lockheed CEO Marillyn Hewson, it was all part of a productive dialogue from someone who was a businessman long before he became the leader of the free world.
Hewson offered her take on the new administration in an interview with Defense News Executive Editor Jill Aitoro.

Il Pentagono è a caccia di risparmi .....
The Pentagon and Lockheed Martin Corp could shave at least 5 percent off the price of stealthy F-35 fighter jets in their upcoming annual purchase contract as the standard version of the plane heads toward a price of below $80 million, people familiar with the talks told Reuters.
The Pentagon, under the direction of Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis, has been exploring how to cut the costs of its most expensive weapons program.
The deal for last year's annual purchase contract, struck this February, put the standard takeoff and landing version of the jet at the lowest price ever, $94.6 million, a 7.3 percent reduction from the previous annual purchase price of $102 million.
The current negotiations are for a batch of about 130 planes.
The talks could shave 5-7 percent, or $660 million, from the approximately 100 standard takeoff and landing "A-model" jets for the U.S. Air Force and the U.S. allies, the people said.

The Air Force’s F-35A is deploying internationally for the first time this weekend, heading to Europe to conduct training exercises with NATO allies, the Pentagon announced Friday.
The Defense Department offered sparse details about the event, which will involve deploying a “small number” of F-35As from the 388th Fighter Squadron at Hill Air Force Base, Utah to an undisclosed location in Europe.
The joint strike fighters will take off sometime this weekend.
After landing, they will then spend several weeks in the region as part of the European Reassurance Initiative, the department’s effort to strengthen military ties with European allies to help deter Russian aggression on the continent.

Nel frattempo ..... i Marines, in piena attività in Giappone, affinano le loro procedure operative .....
The first Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II Joint Strike Fighter squadron to deploy overseas is continuing the type’s expeditionary workup, conducting training exercises to operate the aircraft in real-world scenarios while operating from austere locations.
In separate news releases (*), the U.S. Marine Corps announced that the Green Knights of Marine Fighter Attack Squadron (VMFA) 121 have carried out hot reloads and aviation-delivered ground refueling, or ADGR, training with its F-35Bs at Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni, Japan, on April 6 and 11 respectively.
A hot reload is the process of loading ordnance onto an aircraft while the pilot remains in the cockpit with the engine running.
The ADGR exercise saw a Marine KC-130J Hercules tanker transfer fuel directly to the F-35B while both aircraft were on the ground.

Ci sarà anche una visita di cortesia ad Amendola o a Ghedi ?
During the deployment, the F-35s will first spend a week or so tangling with F-15Cs and Es from Lakenheath, which will be the first overseas F-35A base in a few years.
They will practice both air-to-air and air-to-ground missions, 1v1 and 2v2 scenarios and “fighting our way in…and out” of simulated target areas, but will use no actual ordnance, live or inert.
Further on, the F-35s will practice against British Typhoons, and possibly Dutch F-16s, though the latter engagement isn’t certain yet.
Later still, the jets will make “out and back” visits to other, unnamed NATO countries, but will not participate in exercises or do training during these flights.
Watkins said broadly the other-nation visits are for “familiarization” purposes, and no austere fields will be part of the program.

Il GAO ..... bacchetta ancora ..... :eeeeek:

Development testing of the Lockheed Martin F-35 could be delayed by 12 months and cost another $1.7 billion, the US Government Accountability Office (GA0) warns in a new report published on 24 April (*).
In a report submitted to the US Congress, the GAO says that the F-35’s government managers at the joint programme office (JPO) have adopted an “optimistic” estimate for a five-month delay and $532 million cost overrun to complete Block 3F software, the fifth and final software release to support the 15-year-long system development and demonstration phase of the family of stealth fighters.
GAO’s analysis based on historical data suggests Block 3F testing won’t be complete until May 2018, or 12 months later than currently scheduled.
The GAO’s anticipated or cost growth of $1.7 billion would raise overall development programme costs to $56.8 billion, $22.4 billion higher than the original budget at contract award in October 2001.

Meteor ..... al via l'integrazione sugli F-35B britannici .....
MBDA has been awarded a £41 million ($52.6 million) contract to begin preparing its Meteor beyond-visual-range air-to-air missile for integration with Lockheed Martin's F-35B for the UK.
The European company – which will perform the activity at its Stevenage facility in Hertfordshire, England – says its funding allocation includes "test assets, productionisation and engineering work needed to support Meteor's compatibility and use from F-35".
Under the terms of its risk-reduction contract, MBDA says it will also begin developing "role change kits for the UK's common Meteor stockpile for both the [Eurofighter] Typhoon and Lightning II".
The long-range weapon will require adaptation for carriage within the F-35B's internal weapons bays.
