BAE Systems’ Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System (APKWS) has been deployed on the US Air Force’s Lockheed Martin F-16 - the first time the service has used the weapon on a fixed-wing aircraft.
The laser-guided rocket is being used on board aircraft supporting operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, BAE says, and is part of an urgent operational requirement that also covers its potential use on the Fairchild Republic A-10.

F-16V ..... un nuovo radar ..... e non solo quello .....
“We are taking technologies from the F-22 and F-35 and rolling it into the F-16,” he says.
"The latest kid on the block is the F-16V – it’s an upgrade programme for existing F-16s and the natural next step for those existing and emerging customers of the jet."
More than 3,000 F-16s remain in service, he adds.
The Northrop Grumman APG-83 Scalable Agile Beam Radar, a development of the APG-81 in the F-35, is the jewel in the F-16V’s crown.

Una nuova livrea per gli '
Aggressori' .....
The threat pilots face during exercises over Nellis AFB, Nev., will soon have a new look.
Last week, the 64th Aggressor Squadron unveiled a new ‘splinter’ paint scheme for their F-16s.
The pattern of white, gray, and blue patches with sharp edges “is a means of representing threats more accurately,” said Capt. Ken Spiro, chief of intelligence for 64th AGRS .....

The IRIS-T is among a package of improvements fitted onto some of the RTAF’s F-16s that also includes the Northrop-Grumman AN/APG-68(v)9 radar, Link 16 datalink, the Joint Helmet Mounted Cueing System (JHMCS), Terma ALQ-213 Electronic Warfare Management System and improved night-fighting capabilities.

F-16 .....
After a lengthy negotiating process, the South Korean government awarded a $1.2 billion contract to upgrade 134 Lockheed Martin F-16C/Ds to the F-16V standard, the US Department of Defense announced on 18 November.
The award comes more 16 months after the US State Department cleared South Korea to purchase the upgrade package, which includes the Northrop Grumman APG-81 Scalable Agile Beam Radar (SABR), new modular mission computers, upgraded electronic warfare suites and second generation joint helmet mounted cueing systems.

Un aggiornamento impellente .....
Raytheon will upgrade the Modular Mission Computer (MMC), which manages fire control, weapons management information and head-up display symbology data, among other functions.
The company says the new mission computer will have twice the current processing power and 40 times the current memory.
The Air Force says it needs the beefed-up computing capability in order to support emerging capabilities such as advanced radar and high-definition video.
“The latest upgrade to the computer was fielded in 2013, and a lot of these newer capabilities are going to require greater processing speed, greater throughout,” said John Weyrick, Air Force program manager for the F-16 computer upgrades.

Lunga vita al
Fighting Falcon .....
The F-16 Falcon will live to fight another day, or at least another 4,000 hours, according to the US Air Force and Lockheed Martin.
The USAF authorized extending the F-16’s service life from its original 8,000 flight hours to 12,000 flight hours, a 12 April Lockheed release states.
After performing SLEP modifications, the service will be able to operate the Block 40 through 52 aircraft beyond 2048, according to Lockheed.
The authorization marks a milestone within the USAF’s seven-year SLEP, according to Susan Ouzts, vice president of Lockheed Martin's F-16 programme.

Si prospettano altri
30 anni di vita per gli
F-16 dell'
USAF ......
The US Air Force has released a request for proposals for a contract to beef up the structures on on a subset of the Lockheed Martin F-16 fleet to keep the single-engined fighter in service for at least 30 more years.
In April, the USAF authorized a plan to extend the F-16C/D model’s service life from its original 8,000 flight hours to 12,000 flight hours.
A June notice increased that extension to 13,856 equivalent flight hours.
The SLEP would keep up to 300 Block 40 through Block 52 F-16s flying beyond 2048, with an option to extend the requirement to 489 F-16s.

Fort Worth ..... la fine di un' epoca .....
Chiude la linea di montaggio degli
F-16 ..... verrà spostata a
Greenville, South Carolina .....
Lockheed Martin’s last F-16 produced at its Fort Worth, Texas facility rolled out the door on 14 November, marking the end of a 40-year era for the single-engined fighter.
The last Texas-made F-16 will fly with the Iraqi air force, but over the last four decades the fourth-generation fighter has flown with 28 customers around the globe, from the US Air Force and NASA, to Israel, Venezuela and Poland.
“The Fighting Falcon Nest,” as it affectionately referred to by Lockheed employees, is dwarfed by a F-35 production line that already stretches the length of several football fields.

Sarà pure vecchiotto ..... ma, grazie ai recenti aggiornamenti, continua a destare considerevole interesse .....
Following the recent order for 16 F-16V Block 70 fighters for Bahrain, and the announcement last week that Slovakia has selected 14 of the same version to replace its aging MiG-29 fighters, the Lockheed Martin F-16 is underlining its credentials in the fighter marketplace.
Although the prototype first flew in January 1974, the type remains a force to be reckoned with in competition with much younger rivals.
“We’re seeing a remarkable resurgence in interest in the F-16,” remarked Randy Howard, Lockheed Martin’s F-16 business development executive.
“A lot of it has to do with the Block 70.”
