Three U.S. Marine Corps F-35Bs have taken off from Marine Corps Air Station Yuma, Arizona, en route to NAS Patuxent River, Maryland, ahead of their planned Atlantic Ocean crossing to the United Kingdom.

Sources familiar with the situation said engine pieces and fragments were found on the runway at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida after the fire, the first confirmation that the fire involved the plane's engine, which was built by Pratt & Whitney, a unit of United Technologies Corp.

The Air Force has not released any details about its investigation and a spokeswoman had no immediate comment on the report that engine components were found.

Pratt builds the engines for all three models of the F-35: the Air Force's conventional takeoff A-model, the Marine Corps' B-model, which can land vertically, and the Navy's C-model, which is for use on aircraft carriers.

The sources, who were not authorized to speak publicly, said the discovery of the engine parts did not point to a specific cause of the fire and said the investigation was continuing.

Transatlantic ferry flights of four Lockheed Martin F-35B Lightning IIs, due to make their international debut in the UK, were delayed this week by the engine fire that occurred June 23 at Eglin AFB.
As a result, tentative plans to fly one or more of them over the naming ceremony for the UK’s new aircraft carrier were cancelled.
Britain’s Queen Elizabeth will formally christen the big ship named after her, at Rosyth dockyard in Scotland on July 4.
It is due to commence sea trials in 2017.

« E' un 4 luglio amaro per l'aviazione militare americana: la Marina e l'Aeronautica Usa hanno bloccato tutti i voli degli F35, l'avveniristico aereo militare multiruolo costruito dalla Lockheed Martin e orgoglio dell'industria americana. Il Dipartimento alla Difesa ha comunicato di star ancora provvedendo ai preparativi, ma una decisione finale sarà presa solo all'inizio della settimana.

Non è il primo problema riscontrato sugli aerei del controverso programma americano. Secondo il Washington Post, si tratta del secondo problema in poche settimane allo stesso modello di F-35: a metà giugno, un pilota aveva riscontrato una perdita d'olio e l'Aeronautica aveva sospeso temporaneamente gli addestramenti per effettuare verifiche.

L'Italia ha in programma di acquistare fino a 60 esemplari del modello A (a decollo orizzontale convenzionale) e 30 del modello B (a decollo verticale, per la portaerei Cavour).

Di recente il ministro della Difesa Pinotti ha ribadito che il programma di acquisto degli F-35 resta sospeso fino a quando non sara' messo a punto il Libro Bianco della Difesa. Per ora resta confermato solo l'ordine di sei velivoli per i quali è già stato perfezionato l'acquisto. »

Whenever the Israeli aerospace industry gets work related to the Lockheed Martin F-35, it’s a reminder of the stupid way Israel managed its involvement in the programme.
Because of basic stupidity, the Israeli ministry of defence did not join the F-35 programme as a full partner – as offered by the USA.
After dragging its feet, Israel was instead accepted to the programme at the lowest possible status.

July 10, the secretary will travel to Eglin Air Force Base in Florida, which is home to the Air Force’s first full squadron of F-35A Lightning II joint strike fighter aircraft and is where the next generation of Air Force, Navy and Marine Corps F-35 pilots and maintainers are being trained.
“The secretary's visit, particularly at this time, sends a strong message to our international partners that the United States remains fully committed to the F-35 program,” the admiral said.
The F-35 fleet was grounded July 3 following a fire that occurred in an aircraft still on the runway at Eglin.
The incident remains under investigation.
Hagel is confident that the investigation will help the F-35 return to flight, Kirby said, adding that the secretary is looking forward to hearing more firsthand from the personnel at Eglin.
