BELARUS PLANE CRASHES IN YEREVAN AIRPORT, FOUR SERIOUSLY INJURED
YEREVAN, FEBRUARY 14, ARMENPRESS: Six people were hospitalized after a Belarusian passenger plane caught fire and crashed at Armenia’s biggest Zvartnots airport on Thursday morning, a spokeswoman for Armenia's civil aviation authority said.
The Canadian-built CRJ-100 was heading for Minsk, Belarus, with 18 passengers and three crew members on board when it slid off the runway at the Zvarnots Airport, about 10 km west of Yerevan, one wing hitting the ground, the aircraft splitting into two parts and catching fire. The accident took place at 4:15 a.m. local time.
The 18 passengers and three crew members survived the crash but 6 people were taken to hospital with serious burns, the spokeswoman, Gayane Davtyan, said.
She said nearly everyone on board received burns of various degrees. Flights to and from Yerevan's Zvartnots Airport were halted temporarily and resumed at 11 am.
Officials from Belarus transport ministry, civil aviation committee and Belavia carrier are expected to arrive in Yerevan to join Armenian colleagues for a probe into what caused the crash.
Belavia's chief executive officer, Anatoly Gusarov, said Belarus experts will fly to Moscow and from there to Yerevan.
He said under international laws the reasons behind the crash are examined in the country where it occurs.
He said the crash can not be blamed on bad weather as it was good fro operating flights, but he added that this theory will also be examined.
He said Belavia is looking now for ways to transport these passengers to Minsk- either an extra plane will be sent to Yerevan or they may be flown to Moscow and from there to Minsk.
All passengers on board the plane were Armenians, with six of them citizens of Georgia. All crew members are citizens of Belarus.
